VILLAGERS OF IOANNINA CITY – Biografie
One of the leading Greek heavy rock bands, with a strong footing in the wealthy folk musical tradition of Epirus, furnished with consistent alt-metal and post rock atmospheres.
Historically, every single time a musical movement took form, or a local scene emerged, the roles of the bands involved have been similar. There are the forefathers that laid the path, the loyal workers that took the music as far as possible and the spectacular sensations that made the headlines and brought in the large crowds who until then, were not aware of something important going on. In the case of the Greek heavy rock movement that leaves a mark on European rock n roll this last decade, the Villagers Of Ioannina City have definitely been that spectacular sensation.
The year were everything was set in stone was 2007, in a northwest corner of Greece, among the mountains and lakes of Epirus. VIC treaded around sounds and ideas, looking for a distinctive sonic identity and they really took their time doing so. A few musical gold diggers knew something was brewing within that band, while the large audience had no clue. But that was meant to last only until the spring of 2014, when a couple tracks from the debut album „Riza“ hit unexpectedly the internet and nothing was the same after that. The inspired mixture of classic rock grooves dwelling between Black Sabbath, Tool and Pearl Jam with the traditional instruments and scales from the Greek rich musical past, created a blend meant to strike an impression both locally and internationally.
The massive virality made a lot of heads turn towards that new wave of Greek heavy rock that took the sound of the bagpipe, of the clarinet, of the kaval, of the didjeridoo and put them in alliance with the low tuned electric guitars, the bass and the hammond. In addition, „Riza“ was split between tracks with lyrics in English and in Greek, some adaptations of traditional songs and some original compositions.
The demand for live shows was inevitble and for the following months VIC brought their music out to many European cities (Berlin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, London, among others) and throughout the last years performed in carefully selected shows in Greece, featuring a vast production with up to 10 collaborating musicians, impressive light show and grandiose stage settings, where the attendances varied between 3,000 and 6,000 people per show. In contrast to all that, the band had already started to work on the follow-up album and while keeping the interest hot with shows and the release of the „Zvara/Karakolia“ EP, the foundations for the „Age Of Aquarius“ were laid in absolute secrecy.
4 years in the making is not an easy feat to stay hidden, but VIC did manage to keep it under wraps until the autumn of 2019, when all preparations were completed and a new door opened for them. „Age Of Aquarius“ is exactly what the title implies, a whole new era of creation and experimentation, of an album navigating further towards an organic and meticulus direction, keeping on board the traditional scent that lies in our roots and at the same time, a modern soundwave of heaviness and atmosphere. The new approach in expression and the globality of the message that is meant to be passed along required a universal carrier besides the music itself, so the time had come for the Villagers to embrace the use of English language in the full scale of the record, keeping the local folk scents in the music and the delivery, setting a course for international waters.
DVNE
DVNE is a 5-piece progressive rock/metal band from Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded in 2013, the band was then called Dune in reference to Frank Herbert’s masterpiece of the same name; a statement of the band’s mutual obsession for Sci-fi and fantasy of all forms, the inspiration of which has continued to influence their music to this day.
With highly dynamic compositions venturing from delicate and intricate melodies to crush-ing and brutal soundscapes, Dvne’s music takes its listeners through a deeply emotional journey filled with dystopian thematics, grand narrative, and other-worldly landscapes.
Since Asheran’s release, Dvne has toured all over the UK, Europe and North America and appeared at prestigious festivals such as Psycho Las Vegas, Desertfest London and Inferno Festival Norway to name a few.
Dvne released their sophomore album Etemen Ænka via Metal Blade Record on March 19th alongside one music video for the track SI-XIV and one live performance for the track Towers. DVNE will is currently working on a live session which will come out in July this year. They will also be touring in the EU this October and in the UK with Bossk in December.
