After the very good EP of Origin Konrad Vince Hempstead and his new band Desolate Pathway present the new album "Valley Of The King".
The playing time of almost 38 minutes passes by very fast, because the album, as a good concept album should, seems as if it is made from one piece.
"The Valley of the King" and "Desolate Pathway" are quite riff-focused and settled in slow pace, "typical Doom". However, the hypnotic atmosphere is always interspersed with faster passages, which sound more like Heavy Metal or Hard Rock. "Forest of Mirrors" is based (too much?) on a very catchy riff that seems familiar to the person listening to it. In this song the vocal design shows a few "pop" sections, as in some other songs, too. In addition to the clear sound especially the vocals of Simon Stanton are responsible for a unique sound, that somewhat reminds of Candlemass, but softer, due to a much more epic appearance. "Last of My Kind" then surprises as the epic climax of the album. "Seasons of the Witch" is a homage of doomy NWOBHM. Even "King of Vultures" creates this feeling of "epic grandeur". The final track "Upon the Throne of Lights" is, again, a little faster.
The only major point criticism is the rather frequent repetition within the text of each song.
Hopefully the album will be released on vinyl! The Album is of the big surprises this year! Expected nothing (as I did not know about the changes of the sound compared with Origin Konrad) and then I got almost completely convinced.
Available is on CD-R and as download.
