DEEP PURPLE, EDGUY / 20.11.2012 - Sparkassen-Arena, Kiel - english

There were not many classic heavy metal and hard rock artists with a show in Kiel in the last few years. One exception is the British hard rock-legend Deep Purple. (http://www.setlist.fm/search?query=deep+purple+kiel)

After we picked up our tickets, we waited outside the hall until it was time to go into the hall and the photo pit.
Inside the arena there were not as many people as we expected. The first rank was completely filled but front-of-stage-area had some space to be filled.

At first we thought that it might be filled up after Edguy finished their set. It was quite full, but well attended is still something different.

Edguy began right in time at eight o’clock. The early works of the power metal band from Fulda are not bad, although they are predictable and monotonous. Live a few songs were really good, because the sound had much more power. Most of the songs, however, sound too much like modern pop music. In addition to the announcements ("Highlights": "When I say," Now comes the Song XY, "then you have to cheer", a "You would not see his genitals  anyway"-response to a call for "Striptease") the band did not seemed pleased to open the concert for Deep Purple (they said the opposite). Unfortunately the performance lacked any kind of recognizable enthusiasm.

Setlist

Nobody's Hero
Rock of Cashel
Tears of a Mandrake
Lavatory Love Machine
Superheroes
Ministry of Saints
Save Me
King of Fools

After a thirty minute break Deep Purple got on stage with the first classic song of the evening: "Fireball".

It was followed by 1 hour and 45 minutes perfectly presented rock history. The setlist focused mainly on the albums "Machine Head" (4), "Fireball" (4) and "Deep Purple in Rock" (3). Besides other classic songs (at least 19 years old), there were one song from each of the last two albums.
Who has ever seen Deep Purple live or knows most of their discography knew what to expect. The band was a powerful unit and showed a lot of joy of playing and passion. Besides the many distinctive classic songs the solos of the instrumentalists demonstrate their outstanding musical ability.

The solos by Ian Paice (drums) and Don Airey (keyboards, synthesizers) have to be highlighted.

Ian Paice played quite a short solo that persuaded the audiences with very good timing and power. It is always fascinating to see with how much feeling and accuracy Paice act.

"Don Airey? He can really play anything. He has worked on so many classic albums. "

This is the sentence I say to almost everyone who does not know who Don Airey is. His solo, not only  contains a trip to traditional synthesizer sounds and famous parts of "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" (Mozart) , he also plays some  references to his previous bands (just a small overview: Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Rainbow, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Jethro Tull, Judas Priest, Bruce Dickinson, etc.) such as the intro to "Mr. Crowley "(Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Oz).

Now we have to speak about Ian Gillan (vocals). Nowadays his age (67 years) is visible for everyone. Also, he often disappeared in the instrumental parts of the songs from the stage. But the vocal performance itself was once again very good. Again, no "Child in Time" was played, as Gillian's voice cannot reach the high pitch notes anymore. In my opinion this is the right choice, better not to play a song, than destroy it (some people may even think about that).

All in all it was a very good evening. Deep Purple will hopefully come back to Kiel on the next tour (with the new album). A better opening act and more spectators would be very nice. Who knows how long this band is able to exist. If you have the chance to see them, take it!
